the Crafting an MBA video challenge

Today I’m excited to launch a new project: the Crafting an MBA video challenge!

I’m on a mission to produce more videos to promote my business, and I want you to do the same.

Why is video such a great tool for promoting your business?

Watch the video below to find out why video matters, what the video challenge is, and how you can win a really great prize:

If you want to participate in the challenge, all you have to do is make videos that help promote your business and upload them to YouTube with the tag craftMBA.

*Please note that only videos that promote your business will count towards the challenge.  I’m sure your cats are adorable and your kids are funny, but the goal here is to focus on promoting your business.

Stuck on what kinds of videos to produce?  I’ll be sharing a video a little later in May with a lot of video ideas, but in the mean time, why not start by creating a video that introduces yourself to your customers?

And don’t forget to upload it to YouTube with the tag craftMBA!

  1. What a fantastic idea, Megan! I have been meaning to create some videos to promote my blog and resources, and this is just the push I needed! Thanks!

  2. That is such a great idea!

    Quick question for you:

I don’t know a lot about video and I was wandering if a webcam is enough to make that kind of video?

(I know my boyfriend can also make video with is uber fancy camera but I don’t really how it works… )

    Thanks for the great post!!

    • Marie –

Yes, a webcam is a great place to start! I’ve actually done a lot of video for CMBA in the past just by using the webcam on my MacBook Pro.

  3. This is a great push, Megan! I also always tell myself that I need to shoot more video to promote my business, but I have a hard time getting around to it (or coming up with good ideas for what to shoot). This will be a good challenge for me.

  4. Megan – this is going to be HUGE! I’ve been putting off creating videos because it seems so complicated, but by the end of May I commit to putting at least two (& hopefully 5) videos up. Thanks for giving me the kick in the pants that I need!

  5. I love this idea. I’m a big chicken and I do really need this push! 🙂 You did a great job, btw, in your video. It looks easy, but…

  6. OK, I’ve been trying to get a friend over here to help me create videos for the last month or so. I think this will be the push I need to promote Crafty Girls Workshop! Thanks. OH and can I upload a video that I created awhile back or does it have to be something that was created new now through May?

    • To count for the contest, it should ideally be something you create from now until the end of May. But I’d love to have you upload the ones you’ve already made so we can see those as well.

  7. I love this challenge! I’ve been wanting to make a video but didn’t know where to start. Thanks!

  8. Perfect timing! I just made my second video the other day with plans for several more this weekend! I totally agree that video is an underutilized marketing tool and have plans on incorporating even more videos to my marketing and product plans. Thanks for the contest to really support my efforts! That will help me stay on track even better 🙂

  9. Meg
this is perfect, I need the push…you re right about u tube

  10. Hi Megan, ok, so you have me thinking about doing an introduction video! Any suggestions for what points to cover? That insecure part of me thinks “Why the heck would anyone be interested in me?!”

    Thanks so much!

    • Karin – You’re cards are so great – I think an intro video talking about how you came up with the idea and where you get your inspiration would appeal to a lot of people!

  11. Great contest!! I am going to give it a try… I´m a graphic and web designer but never made videos myself, so it will be a real challenge 🙂

  12. Love this challenge. When I first started my business in October I was really trying not to go on camera but it is awesome to have and I have met so many subscribers. It really spreads the word when people can see what you do especially for the arts. I already had summer projects planned to video.

  13. Oh wow! Like everyone else mentioned, video is something I’ve been *meaning* to do forever…I’ve even got a cute little flip camera and a tripod. I’m just so scared of the editing process, and of course, creating interesting content.

This is a great idea and hopefully the kick in the pants I need! 🙂

  14. So up for this challenge I have used Animoto to make a few videos showing pictures of my work but this is a great challenge to get me in front of the camera. I look forward to watching all the great videos submitted by everyone.

  15. Thanks, Megan! I’ll give it a try!

  16. Thanks Meg! Can we tag current videos that we have to be entered into the challenge or can we only upload and tag the new ones?

    • Kamilah –

Definitely tag existing videos if you want to show them off (I’ll be featuring various videos throughout the month) but only those made during the month the contest is running will count towards the prize!

This is wonderful, marvelous, I’m so in love with it! (please put the music together with the words). This is going to be a great addition to my face-to-face networking. How will get to see the videos? Do I email and post to facebook with link?

  18. A challenging challenge if ever there was one! It’s an inspiring challenge as well.

There’s so much more to running a successful craft business than just making something great and making it well! I’m planning on embracing the challenge by drawing on the resources around me–namely the other creative people in my house (I knew the media class my daughter is taking would pay off!).

  19. Thanks for the call to action.

My product is video based and I still find myself mostly blogging in pictures… crazyness.
I just made the intro of my last webinar into a youtube video and tagged it.
Fashion Techpacks explaining details to factories that need to deliver production to stores.

  20. Jahje, aka Baby Jives

I am definitely in, I made my first video last month and have been making plans for more. This will be just the push I need to actually realize those plans. Ready to go!

  21. Great motivation!

One thing that has kept me back is not knowing what tools to use to do this. What do you recommend (I’m on a mac) in terms of using my webcam and what editing tools to use?

    Thanks Megan!

    • Hey Holly –

Looks like you’re figuring it out!

I’ve got some posts coming up soon about what equipment and to use and how to edit videos, but if you’re on a Mac, shooting with your webcam and editing with iMovie is a great place to start!

      • work/life balance is the name of the game! But then again ppeloe (other mothers, fathers, grandparents, brides and grooms) are depending on your images.Depending on your so emotional images to treasure moments for a lifetime.P.S:you made me commenting on another post of yours exactly because not only your images but also your thoughts are very touching.Carry on what you know to do best:love your family and love your images.

  22. Megan, you know how to motivate! I am going to commit to posting 2 videos by the end of May as well. Ditto what everyone else said…totally been meaning to, blah blah blah. So, now that it’s out there, I will put it on the list to do. I am on a Mac as well, that I am totally overwhelmed with (got it as a hand-me-down), and have been ignoring iMovie. Any editing info you have coming up will be devoured!
    thanks so much,
    Kristi Pamperin

  27. Last year I decided to stop paying for ads and start making stop action animations to promote my pieces. I have used them to also promote craft shows I’ve participated in. They are linked on my homepage, mentioned in my Etsy listings when I’m selling the work from the animation, and I post them on YouTube and Vimeo. It’s been a lot of fun and I love having some free content out there that people want to watch over and over.

Here’s the link to my latest one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xy8tPPOdNWw
The other four are there too.

Thanks for this great challenge! I’m looking forward to seeing what others contribute too.

  28. Thank you for the inspiration! And thank you for the video ideas you posted today – those really got my creative juices flowing. (But not in a icky messy way. LOL) Now all I need to do is figure out video editing software. Any suggestions?

  29. I have been making some videos recently and hopefully will have more soon. I tagged a video I made a little while back on You Tube. I saw with your replies above that it cannot be in the contest, but I had a lot of fun making it and thought it would be fun to share. My ‘video’ is more of a stop motion animation, does that count? ; )

  31. I’ve always thought of videos as a great way to promote, since I love watching them myself! But I never had the courage to try it…until now. Literally got the courage today and decided to just go for it! I know that your challenge was one of the many little nudges I needed to get to this point…so thank you 🙂

  32. I have posted a few videos online, and will definately tag them with craftMBA and I look so forward to seeing what ideas and tips you can give us! Thank you

  33. This sounds like a great marketing idea for everyone. Of course it would require me to clean up my art room, wear makeup & find clothes that reduce my appearance by 40lbs.
Still, I am considering it, even though I am just a beginner at licensing art.

  35. I am just learning about this site, you and the contest. I hope you run it again for those of us that came late to the party. I am just getting to know my inner artist and crafter and so far I am in love.

  36. Thank you so much for putting this challenge together! It got my husband and business partner inspired to make videos, and this was just the push we needed.
