video challenge: how to edit your videos, part 1

Last week, we looked at how to set up your own video recording studio and how to gain confidence in front of the camera.  For today’s installment of the Crafting an MBA video challenge, we’ll be covering a topic I know many of you have questions about: how to edit your videos.

For this lesson, I’ll be sharing how to edit your videos using iMovie.  iMovie is a great option if you’re on a Mac because it comes free with the computer but you can actually do a lot with the program once you know how to use it.

(Apologies to those of you on a PC – unfortunately I’m a Mac only girl.  But even if you’re on a PC, I’d still recommend watching the videos, because we share some great tips for thinking about videos that aren’t specific to the program.)

Because there’s a lot involved in video editing, I’ve broken the tutorial down into seven videos.  I’ll be sharing the first four today, and the rest tomorrow.

Part 1: Introduction & Importing Footage

In this first video, I walk you through setting up your file in iMovie and getting your video footage into the program.

Part 2: Editing Basics

In this part, we’ll be looking at cutting and copying the video you want to use, plus other basic editing.

Part 3: Video Adjustments

In this part, we’ll talk about how to adjust the color and exposure on your videos.

Part 4: Audio Adjustments

In this part, we talk about adjusting your audio, plus adding music or sound effects.

If you take nothing else from these tutorials, I want you to remember that when you’re working with video, nothing is permanent and nothing is sacred. Don’t be afraid to get in there and play because you can always undo or revert back to your original video.  Armed with these guidelines, I hope you’ll feel confident just to dive in and start editing those videos! (And don’t forget to upload those videos to YouTube with the tag “craftMBA”)

Tomorrow, we’ll finish up our video editing tutorial with tips for adding title slides and images, exporting your video for maximum quality, and uploading to YouTube (and tagging and titling so that your videos are found).

  3. Video 3 isn’t playing, it’s marked “This video is private”. I’ve been able to watch all of the other ones, thanks for the great information.

  4. Megan, Thanks so much for this informative post. I recently started using iMovie to record some video for my blog, but had no idea how to edit or do anything else besides record the video. This was super helpful and I’m delighted to join the video challenge.
