Hi! I’m megan auman, and I’m the founder of craftMBA.com.
For the past 3 1/2 years, I’ve been running my own business – designing and making jewelry and objects – and teaching jewelry, metalsmithing, and object design. I’ve also had the privilege of traveling across the country to teach business thinking and social media to others in the craft field.
I’m fortunate to have a formal education in the crafts. I have a BFA and an MFA in metals and jewelry. And I’m even more fortunate to have attended programs that didn’t discourage me from thinking about how to make money making things.
But (mostly because I like school) I sometimes find myself wondering what I could learn from pursuing an MBA. But like a lot of crafters I know, I don’t have the time or the funds to attend business school. So instead, I’ve decided to craft my own MBA through a combination of real world experience and self-study. (I read A LOT.)
And because I love to teach and share, I’ve started this website to help other designers and makers develop their business skills. So, have a look around and let me know if there are any topics you’d like to see here. Feel free to leave a comment or drop me a line at megan (at) craftMBA.com – I’m always happy to talk business, craft, and design!
Wow, a blog that I can see grow from the very beginning! Congrats on starting this up. I’ve also been thinking about getting an MBA at the local university. Maybe that’s not necessary. I just found your site today, and I love finding new blogs so I don’t have tons of material to “catch up” on. 🙂
May – welcome to the site! Its nice to think about other people joining me on this journey from the beginning!
And for the record, I don’t think you need an MBA to run your business better. There are lots of amazing resources available for anyone with enough drive to take advantage of them!
Hi there Megan,
I first signed up to your email list Jan 2011, applied a filter that sent it to a folder, then pretty much forgot about it. I’d just started making jewellery and had a vague desire to make some money from it. Never happened. I read a few in 2012 and then forgot again.
It’s 2013 and I’m heading down that path again.
I’ve decided to start reading your blog from the start. Wish me luck.
Thanks for the awesome resources you provide.
